I Disagree

Well, it finally happened.  I just wrote my first comment on an article that opposed the opinion of another reader.  Big deal, you say?  Well, if you knew me really well you would probably agree that my natural tendency is to avoid conflict.

Today I was reading an article that was mentioned in the Health Informatics Technology LinkedIn Group that I belong to which took me to a Wall Street Journal article in the Careers section.  When I finished this article I spotted something else.

I Disagree

I Disagree

Nothing attracts the attention of a sports crazed society than a star in a slump and what they are doing to get out of it – with a picture of one of my favorite of all time sportsman, Jack Nicklaus!

I read the article with interest, and several points hit home with me – topics that I have talked about, trained on, and even touched on here in my blog.  When I finished reading, I clicked on the comments tab and read the comments that were left and was so surprised by the first one that I immediately began writing a response.

Who Is Your Trusted Advisor?

If you think of anyone that has reached a milestone or pinnacle in their career or art or craft or sport – you can probably point to a time when they were in their 15 minutes of fame (granted it is a lot more for some of them).  during these times they are often asked about why they made it and they are then on the spot to identify someone that had the greatest impact on their success.

Whether it is an acceptance speech at the Emmy’s, Grammy’s, awards dinner, press conference, or any other venue where all the important eyes are upon them and they need to give credit to the person or people that helped them get there.

This is usually where we hear about the coach, mentor, teacher, minister, parent or other individual that was highly influencial and provided the advice, guidance and counsel that helped them along their way.

Even Don Vito Corleone had his Consiglieri sitting at his right hand and advising him in all things important!

Unemployment Rates and Recruiting

Ask most anyone, and they will likely tell you that recruiting must be bad like the rest of the economy these days because there is just so much unemployment recruiters cannot possibly make any money.  This might just seem logical to the masses, but in reality the numbers show a much different story.

Search Entrepreneurs that are connected to the right like minded individuals and networked with sources within the recruiting industry have enough feedback and knowledge (as well as first hand metrics) to know recruiting is essentially immune to the effects of a recession.

The 50 Year Journey

Wow, I am still recovering from the weekend celebrations!  We kicked it off with a feast of great Mexican food made from scratch by my Aunt on Friday night (she cooked all day and not a single thing came from a can), to the anniversary party on Saturday night followed by the family reunion held on Sunday it was quite a weekend of catching up, remembering days and times gone by, and reminiscing about the journeys we were all on presently.

For the party, family and friends came in from all over the state as well as some special guests from the other side of the country – what a treat to have my Aunt and Uncle in for my parent’s celebration of 50 years of marriage, and along with them came all the familiar faces (reminding myself of the tune “I’ll be seeing you in all the old familiar places”) and it was quite the blast from the past in terms of memories.

Measure Twice Cut Once

From the earliest project that I could remember, my father taught me the lesson of measuring twice and only cutting once.  I am not even sure when the lesson happened; I just remember it being ingrained in me in such a way that I measure twice cut oncenow say it to my son and even others near me when the shoe fits.  No, that is not a precursor to a posting full of sayings learned from my parents and grandparents.  Or is it? (As my son would ask just to be funny.)

Okay, to take a moment on this tangent, I do remember the cast iron pot stand in my grandmother’s kitchen that said “the hurrier I go the behinder I get” and no I don’t see the proper grammar or spelling in that either.  I also learned as teenager “any job worth doing, is worth doing well” which probably came from mowing the lawn.  In my case the two likely collided when my father caught me rushing through the lawn to get it done faster, and then having to do it a second time because too many blades of grass escaped the mower blade in my haste.

Blogs and Opinions

BloggingI started writing Life at the Helm with an inaugural post about how I came about naming the blog in the first place.  At the time, I had no idea if I would be writing one post a year let alone more frequently.  For some, writing is a lot like public speaking especially if they know it has a chance of being read by others.  Why write a blog if you are afraid of someone reading it?  That is likely another post entirely.  Blogs exist for different reasons; if you research it even a little you will find that there are hundreds of reasons – fun, education, sales, marketing and even griping.  As a recruiter by profession, I talk with thousands of people every year in the course of doing my work and with the onset of the Internet Age and the accessibility to information about nearly everything you ever wanted to know about at your fingertips, people expect to be able to go onto the Internet and find out more about me.

I can’t blame them, as for every time I look to buy something, travel somewhere or eat at a new restaurant, I conduct some quick research on the Internet and read reviews and other information about it.  It is a bit odd when you find nothing – almost an indication that you should wait on that one.  When you do find it, there is always a predominance of information that would have you leaning one way or another – kind of like asking the audience for assistance on “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” and as you know, the majority always falls on the “final answer”.

Desperation and Hope

Candles of HopeWhere did I dig up that title?  Well, I wrote a blog entitled “Where is my muse?” that was all about finding the seeds of an idea that would be the catalyst to writing a blog post.  The seed for these ideas are all around us and one only need to take a look around and there is usually sometime to write on, comment or talk about.

Looking at my lists of ideas to blog about when a topic does not come readily to mind I see this one: Create a post that incorporates the words “desperate” and “futile” and I think ,”How hard can that be coming off such a difficult 2009 in this country?”  As a recruiter I watch for many indicators in business, and many of these indicators come from other business owners and the company contacts I am in touch with.  This past year was a year of trials and tribulations, and I would even say that in many of my conversations there was evidence of fear and trepidation.  How can they move forward without knowing what will be coming next?

Where is my muse?

Sometimes it is difficult to pick a topic to write about.  At least for me it is.  I talk about a wide variety of topics and influences in my life What is a muse but insipration?and there is usually some catalyst to the start of it, and then sometimes as I start writing with a topic in mind, yet I end up writing something completely different than what I thought I started on.

For many bloggers, their content follows a theme.  For me, I am the common thread.  Interesting for some, not so for others I am sure (I am laughing at myself right now) and in the end the catalyst can take different forms.  The seed for a blog post may be a muse of sorts – this could be a person that elicits thoughts and introspection, and there have been many a muse in my life that have caused me to think on life, money, happiness, success and love.

Serendipity and Simplification

Recently, while researching a topic for work, I happened onto a bit of content that caught my eye and I clicked on a link to read more, which led me to another page where something else drew my attention and before I knew it I was somewhere that I had not intended to go, but at an article that I read with interest that reminded me of a book I had long ago misplaced.

That was a mouthful, right?  Thinking about it all for a moment I was trying to come up with the word that best described that whole process and I thought it might be serendipity.  So, I did what many of us do and Googled it.  Is that even a word?  Likely it is going to be at some point.  There is a cool feature on www.google.com that allows you to look up definitions of a word on the Internet – all you have to do is type define: (and the word you want to look up).  You will get all sorts of definitions depending on how prolific the word is used on the net.  In this case, the top definition for serendipity is “good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries.”

Starting a Business

Hot off a Leadership Workshop and I am all pumped up!  Many of you may have caught the interview I did with Doug Beabout recently where we discussed numerous topics, and he shared his opinion on the importance of surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals when starting a business.

This past week was just that for me, a group of like-minded entrepreneurs that had all launched businesses in the search arena, and it was really rewarding.  There is a lot published about getting started in business, including a lot of Do’s and Don’ts and Checklists on what to remember, etc.  Lot’s of the standard points on how to finance it, what name you pick out for it, how you will market and sell your products or services and other nuts and bolts basics for moving it all forward.

At the Leadership Workshop this past week Jeff Skrentny opened the event with a session that lived up to the usual greatness that he is known for all over the country – and it was really informative and motivating!  He spent time covering some great information about how the search entrepreneurs in attendance could bring their businesses up to the next level – and, in words he would love, “knock it out of the park!”  One thing he said that did not hit me at the time was that you really need to enjoy what you are doing.  If you are not having fun doing it, get out and do something else.
